How our MFL trips support the new GCSEs

At WST, we are passionate about creating a love of languages. We aim to provide young people with an opportunity to visit other countries, experience different cultures and to meet and talk with locals. And that’s what lies behind our programme of new MFL tours.

As you’ll know the new GCSEs for FrenchSpanish, and German, were introduced in September 2024. Although there may be some differences in approach across exam boards the aims of the new exams are clear: to create content that is more accessible for students, so they are clearer what they need to know; to boost their confidence when speaking a foreign language; to ensure they all feel included and are able both to speak and write about the things that interest them most.

The new GCSE will:

  • see speaking, writing, listening and reading taught together
  •  incorporate the use of phonics
  • include a range of thematic contexts which are both engaging and relatable
  • contain content which widens knowledge of culture, history and literature
  • Base learning on building frequently occurring vocabulary

How our MFL trips support the new GCSEs

Our MFL trips always have a positive and lasting impact on students. Our new MFL trips don’t simply support the new GCSEs, they offer a range of practical, engaging ways to deepen language learning by providing real-life, immersive learning experiences that enhance students' understanding and skills. And here’s how!

A chance to practise

As the new GCSE exams place a strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills, a core element of our new MFL tours is the chance to talk with native speakers in a range of real-life situations. Not only can we offer language classes which are led by native speakers but our guided tours are led by locals and can be delivered partly in the local language to provide opportunities for scaffolded learning using listening and speaking skills.

More to experience

With an emphasis now on raising awareness of the local traditions, history and culture we have created a series of stimulating activities which focus on this whilst actively incorporate opportunities to speak, listen and read in the local language. So, whether it’s an evening eating tapas & flamenco dancing, or visits to local cultural specialities such as bakeries & chocolate shops our MFL tours will widen develop your students’ cultural awareness in ways that make learning engaging and fun.

Expand their vocabulary

Is there a better way to increase their familiarity with the core vocabulary they need to know than for your students to use it in context? It could be a lesson with a native speaker who is an experienced second language teacher familiar with the frequently occurring language or even visit to a local museum where the guide actively encourages students to answer & ask questions in the local language there is plenty of opportunity to for active scaffolded learning.

Growing their confidence

Our MFL trips are designed to help build your student’s confidence in using a foreign language and to make it fun whilst they do so. Take for example our MasterChef Barcelona activity where your students to experience the thrill of cooking with their friends in a professional kitchen in Barcelona. They will shop, chop, cook, eat, and drink real Spanish & Catalan tapas. Your students will naturally have to think on their feet, making them more inclined to put their skills to the test in real-life environments.

Relationship building and teamwork

Our MFL trips encourage students to collaborate to achieve tasks and solve challenges. Whether it’s navigating a foreign city, ordering food, or teaming up for an E3 Trail, these tasks encourage teamwork and group discussions in the language, enhancing overall language proficiency and confidence.

Summary

By offering immersive, real-life experiences, our MFL trips support classroom learning and the aims of the new GCSEs. This holistic approach improves students' linguistic skills, cultural awareness, and exam preparation, helping your students become confident and well-rounded language learners.
