About this trip

For those schools studying WJEC Eduqas Period Study Option 2B: The Development of Germany 1919-1991, Anglia is delighted to be able to offer a fully-guided 3-day tour to Berlin, which focuses on the key trends and turning points that have affected the development of the German state.

With visits to the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Members of the Reichstag, the tour starts by looking at the impact of the First World War on Germany, the challenges faced by the Weimar Republic and the Rise of the Nazi Party. This is followed by a guided tour of the Sachsenhausen Memorial and the opportunity to view the Topography of Terror exhibition, where we explore the path taken to dictatorship and the creation of the police state.

At the Cecilienhof Palace, site of the 1945 Potsdam Conference, our focus moves to post-war partition and relations between East and West. This is followed by a visit to the Allied Museum and then the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre where we consider the differences between the two Germanies, the Berlin blockade and significance of the Berlin Wall.

The tour concludes with a chance to visit the Willy Brandt Forum and Checkpoint Charlie where we examine the changing relations between West and East Germany, and the factors which led to the fall of the Wall and reunification in 1990.

Each of the suggested visits has been carefully selected in order to ensure you cover the required content of this module affording your students the opportunity to consider the developments, events and personalities that have shaped recent German history.
